Bogota, Colombia. 8:40 p.m. Two hundred thousand pesos, returned. No camera.

All characters are 18 or older. Fiction.

The arrangement was two hundred thousand pesos on the first Friday of every month for a year, and I had paid eleven times, and the twelfth was in an envelope in my jacket with the date written on the front in my own handwriting. I had counted it four times. I had rehearsed what I would say at the door, which was not much, because in a year I had never once been invited to say much.

He opened the door before I knocked, the way he always did.

"Esteban."

"Senor." I held out the envelope. "The last one."

He did not take it. He stepped back and let me in, and I stood in the middle of the room with the envelope in my hand and understood that something was different, because the table was not empty. There was a black folder on it, thick, with a label on the spine, and beside the folder a small hard drive in a rubber case, and beside that a glass of water.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat. He sat across from me and put his hand flat on the folder.

"One year," he said. "Twelve payments of two hundred thousand. Two million four hundred thousand pesos. You have never been late. You have never asked for a discount. You have never once asked me what the money was for." He looked at me. "Do you know what it was for?"

"For this." I gestured at the room.

"No." He opened the folder. "It was for the file."

The first page was a photograph of me from the first night, printed, with a date stamp in the corner and a line of handwriting underneath. The second page was a payment log, twelve lines, each with a date and an amount and a small tick. The third was a page of notes in that same careful hand, a paragraph for every month, and I read two lines of the first one and had to stop.

"That is not..." I put the page down. "You said nobody sees these."

"Nobody sees these." He turned the folder around and pushed it across the table until it touched my hand. "They are yours. All of it. The drive has the footage, unedited, twelve sessions. The folder has the logs and the prints. There is no copy. I do not keep copies of a closed file." He sat back. "Your debt is finished, Esteban. It finished in September. You have been paying a man who owed you money for three months, and I have been waiting to see if you would notice."

I did not say anything for a while. The fridge hummed. Down in the street somebody was arguing with a gate.

"Why," I said.

"Because you were twenty-three and you were paying to be looked at, and a boy who pays to be looked at will believe, eventually, that being looked at is something he has to buy. That is a bad belief to carry out of a room like this." He picked up his glass and drank. "The Angel of Bogota has a rule about debts. He does not leave one open, in either direction."

I opened the folder again and turned the pages. Month four: a note about how I had stopped apologising. Month seven: a note about the day I had laughed. Month eleven: three words, written larger than the rest, I DO NOT THINK SO, and I could not remember what it referred to, and I sat there trying to remember and could not, and that was somehow the worst part.

"Two hundred thousand pesos," he said, nodding at the envelope still in my hand. "Keep it. Buy something that has nothing to do with me."

"And the twelfth session?"

He looked at the clock on the wall and then at me.

"There is no twelfth session," he said. "There is tonight, if you want it, and there is no money in it and no camera in it. I put the phone in the drawer before you came up. If you want to take your folder and go, you go, and I will not follow you and I will not call you." He stood. "If you want to stay, you stay because you want to, which is a thing that has not been true in this room for a year, and I would like to know what that looks like."

I put the envelope on the table. I put the folder on top of it, squared, the way he squared things.

"I want to stay," I said.

He did not smile. He came around the table and took my face in both hands and kissed me, and it was not like the other times, when the kissing was a step in a procedure. It went on for a long time. His thumb moved at the corner of my jaw.

"Say it again," he said.

"I want to stay."

"Good." He let go. "Then take your clothes off and get on the bed, and do not ask me what happens next."

I undressed and lay down and he came to me without anything in his hands, no bottle, no phone, no envelope, and that was stranger than any of it. He kissed my chest and my stomach and the inside of my thigh, and he took his time in a way that had nothing to do with an hour or a schedule. When he finally pushed into me I had my arms around his neck and my mouth against his shoulder and I said his name, which I had never done, and he stopped and looked at me and then kept going.

It was slow. It was almost quiet. At the end I had my hand in his hair and he had his forehead against mine, and neither of us said anything at all.

Afterwards he got up and brought me water and sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me, and I looked at the gold ring on his hand and the line of his shoulders and I did not ask about the wife, because I had learned not to, and because I understood that the not asking was the last thing he had that was his own.

At the door he gave me the folder and the drive in a canvas bag, and he put one hand on my chest and held it there for a second.

"The Angel of Bogota does not say goodbye," he said. "He leaves before the questions. You know this."

"I know."

"So do not ask me one." He opened the door. "Go home, Esteban."

I went down the stairs with the bag against my chest. I did not look back, and I did not hear the door close, and I have never seen him again.

That is where the story stops. The tape does not.

The written version leaves out the part the camera was paid to keep. It is twenty-two minutes long and it starts exactly where this page ends.
